October 9
I should blow my nose. I should do ironing, I should take a shower, I should get dressed.

My, how time flies when you’re working your buns off.
I seem to end up spending more time planning and re-planning my future than my current courses. A fault, I’m afraid. Have a way to test the “Tube of Plenty” thesis - compare the clothing on the top 10 TV shows with the clothing of the most popular recording groups, among kids who would be in college 1966-1972. Then compare what was being sold to that group in catalogs. Do the same for 1974. Needs work.
Jim is in Hershey, PA for the car show again. Still no job, and we’ve been here three months. Tomorrow’s our sixth anniversary.
1977
Now that the week is over, I wish I had it to do all over again. I really enjoyed it. Got lots of nice compliments that will sustain me for the rest of the semester.
It’s a rainy Sunday - dark and chilly. A good day to work on all my annoying projects. Gah! I am thinking of learning Japanese (at least reading) on my own. There are abut 300 basic characters, so I suppose I could learn ten a week for thirty weeks and at least have a foundation. So far I can read Japan, Tokyo, man, woman, say and trust. Also child and peace.
1978
Oh, swell. My hay fever has converted itself into a real cold. Simultaneous with the first frost, which probably limited my pollinate enemies. Of my $175 in disposable income, I have now spent $72 on boots, $25 on a ring, and $28 on a book. How can I divide up the remaining $50? Shoes are very important; I need something that could bridge the work/dressy business gap and in comfort. They'll probably cost me $25-$30. I could use a skirt. I could use a head transplant!
I should go to PG Plaza and scout around before class. I should, I should.
I should blow my nose. I should do ironing, I should take a shower, I should get dressed. Notice how little any of this has to do with school or work.

My one and only pair of Frye boots. They were wonderful, and worth every penny.
1997
A day to savor, or a day to get through. I want to try to make it a savory day, despite the apparently hectic schedule ahead. It starts with some quiet work. I’ll be a writer today, if only for an hour.
2002
I have 10 minutes before class starts, sitting here listening to some Afro-Celtic music on Radio@Netscape. I truly believe World Music is the future...
Much as I like to be well-informed, I have had about as much news lately as I can handle. Time to find some good escapist fun.
2009
Catoctin! Only a few more days until the annual retreat at Catoctin Mountain National Forest, otherwise just known as ”Catoctin” at our church. The word conveys so much to me – fall, friends, cool nights, long talks, stars. Jim and I are coordinating this year, which I find takes some of the relaxation out of it, but so far none of the fun of anticipation. and I hope it is still a good weekend for all, despite having been moved from Greentop to Round Meadow.

Inktober day 9 - star
2023
We thought long and hard about going to Catoctin this year, but finally admitted that the saggy cots, overheated dorms and cramped dining hall of this year’s site were not enticing us. The other, more usual site (right across the road from Camp David, for you locals) was slightly more attractive, because the spacious dining hall and adjacent auditorium was perfect for all the casual hanging out that always went on. But we have finally aged out of the charm of long 2 AM walks in the woods to get to the bathrooms. So, no. Not this year, and maybe not ever again. We’ll take it one year at a time, though.
2024
Another year with no Catoctin. I hear it was highly successful, but I am not feeling the tiniest twinge of regret. We may well do a day trip in the future, weather and schedule permitting.
Inktober Day 9 - Sun
I spent yesterday coming up with nada. Then got up this morning and the sun filled my room.
And I remembered e. e. cummings.
